A report from the noon news shows that this institution specializing in the care of people with disabilities currently cares for 290 patients, of which 90 are interns.

Diaz-Canel was accompanied by the Minister of Public Health, José Ángel Portal Miranda, the president of the Provincial Defense Council of Havana, Luis Antonio Torres Iríbar, and the vice president, Reinaldo García Zapata.

Alejandro Freijó Villarreal, a 50-year-old patient who has been in La Castellana for 27 years, accompanied the president during the tour of the center.

"Here there is a work of love, trust and hope. Here human rights are defended, work is done from feelings and commitment, and the humanist vocation of the Revolution is demonstrated," wrote Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez in the visitors' book.

La Castellana is one of the 28 existing centers in Cuba for the care of children, youth and adults with intellectual disabilities in their most severe forms. In this entity, methods and ways are constantly sought to improve comprehensive care that minimizes the effects of the deficiency or deficit on the global set of development, integrating their family and social environment.

According to the Government page on Twitter, this social institution was a private clinic, whose owners came from the Spanish region of Castilla y León, and the Revolution, in 1963, assigned it to the care of people with special educational needs.

It also highlights that as of 1967 the first psychopedagogical programs were introduced, which is why there is a transition from a functionalist paradigm, based on very clinical criteria, to advanced scientific conceptions, which allowed a better development of the cognitive model in people with severe intellectual disabilities, under the principle that everyone is educable.
