Cuba and International Children's Day

Since then, every year on this date multiple activities are carried out, although beyond this in our country programs are constantly carried out aimed at promoting the defense of children and their full incorporation into educational, artistic, sports and recreational activities that contribute to their formation and full development.

The International Children's Day was instituted in the world in correspondence with what was agreed at the Congress for the Defense of Children held in Vienna in April 1952.

This initiative materialized with the purpose of promoting formulas to achieve the harmonious development of the child's personality and launching a universal campaign to ensure a fuller life for infants.

Precisely the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, of the United Nations Organization, raises the need to protect them against all forms of abandonment, cruelty and exploitation.

Para Cuba, los niños son la esperanza del mundo

The aforementioned Declaration also details how necessary it is to educate children in a spirit of understanding, tolerance, friendship among peoples, peace and universal brotherhood and with the full awareness that they must devote their energies and aptitudes to the service of their fellow men. .

Beyond the work carried out by different Cuban organizations to promote the proper care and development of infants, with regard, for example, to guaranteeing them education, free medical care, as well as recreation, it should be noted in a very special way that there has also been in the country since 1961 what is currently identified as the "José Martí" Pioneer Organization, which has even held conferences in which children have presented their experiences, aspirations and needs to the highest leaders of the country and have been listened to carefully. the Apostle of Cuban Independence.

In this sense, the meetings and dialogues held by the maximum leader of the Revolution, Commander in Chief Fidel Castro, both in congresses and in other activities carried out on the occasion of Children's Day, are memorable.

And when dealing with childhood and having mentioned José Martí, we also remember that he created in 1889 in a transcendental way a magazine dedicated to infants.

Precisely in the introductory note that he published in the first edition of the aforementioned magazine that circulated in July, he highlighted: “This newspaper is for boys, and for girls of course. Without girls you cannot live, just as the earth cannot live without light.”

José Martí also specified: “The child has to work, to walk, to study, to be strong, to be beautiful: the child can become beautiful even if he is ugly; a good, intelligent and neat child is always beautiful.”

In Cuba there is currently a publisher, identified as Gente Nueva, which creates works especially aimed at children and adolescents.

Publications are also published, among them Pionero and Zun zún, aimed at the younger generations of Cubans, as well as radio and television programs and films in which numerous children participate.

There are also groups and artistic ensembles made up of children who enjoy great prestige at the national level and some, as is the case of La Colmenita, have achieved great notoriety in the international arena.

There are also zoos, palaces and pioneer camps, playgrounds and other areas and buildings in different cities where children can enjoy hours of recreation and at the same time they can obtain valuable knowledge.

Cuba takes into account and makes a reality an essential principle exposed by José Martí: “We work for children because they are the ones who know how to love. Children are the hope of the world."
