1935. Candelaria Acosta Fontaine dies in Havana.

Known by Cuban patriots as Ella Cambula, she was the partner of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes with whom she had two children, Carlos Manuel and Carmen. She made the flag that flew for the first time in La Demajagua and Yara, after the armed uprising that occurred on October 10, 1868.

On January 20, 1935, the Minister of State notified Cambula that she had been awarded the "Carlos Manuel de Céspedes" Order, with the rank of Officer. She, however, was ill in those days and she had to be decorated in her bed, at 43 Lacret Street, in Havana.

Her birth took place in the Veguita area, near the La Demajagua sugar mill, jurisdiction of Manzanillo on February 2, 1851.

In Cuba, when the National Assembly of People's Power was constituted in 1976, it was decided that the initial flag carried by Céspedes and those who supported him in the war for the independence of Cuba would preside over the sessions of the highest government body of the Republic, together with the national flag. from Cuba. The flag that flew in the fields of Cuban territory at the beginning of the war for the independence of Cuba is preserved in the Museum of the City of Havana.

 

2006. Marta Arjona dies in Havana. She, an outstanding potter and sculptor, stood out in an essential way for her prolific work for the conservation of Cuba's cultural heritage.

At the time of her death, she was serving as President of the National Council of Cultural Heritage of our country.

After the triumph of the Revolution took place in Cuba, she put aside her personal artistic work and efficiently took care of safeguarding the country's patrimonial assets. She worked in the rescue of the tangible and intangible riches that today are part of the National Heritage.

Likewise, Marta Arjona carried out a very important task in the creation of the network of museums in the country and the preservation of Cuban historical memory, aspects that she, as she confessed, were among her many satisfactions.

For her meritorious work, numerous awards and distinctions were conferred on her.

Among her recognitions, it is worth noting that she was awarded the status of Doctor Honoris Causa in Art conferred on her by the Higher Institute of Art, ISA, and she was also declared a Labor Heroine of the Republic of Cuba.

Her birth took place in the Cuban capital on May 3, 1923.
