National Fertility Survey to Begin in April in Cuba
A National Fertility Survey (ENF), which will include people between 15 and 54 years of age throughout the national territory, will be carried out from April 1 to 30 by the National Statistics and Information Office (ONEI) and its Center for Population and Development Studies (CEPDE).
Juventud Rebelde points out that Diego Enrique González, director of CEPDE, informed that the results of the research will offer scientific evidence and information on the reproductive decision making of men and women in the midst of a demographic scenario characterized by a low birth rate that does not ensure generational replacement.
During the methodological seminar to train specialists from different regions of the country about the NFS, González Galbán said that fertility constitutes one of the most important demographic phenomena for the growth of populations, according to this newspaper.
In relation to the importance of the survey, González Galbán explained that it constitutes a milestone as it is the first to be carried out in the country after the appearance of the COVID-19 pandemic and that it will be carried out with mobile data collection devices.
He added that this field operation will be a training exercise for the Population and Housing Census, and highlighted the support received for its implementation from the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
For her part, Alejandra Trossero, Unicef representative in Cuba, expressed that the NFS will contribute to a better understanding of the fertility situation in the country and how those results relate to regional reports and the indicators of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals.
He also highlighted the collaborative links between ONEI and UNICEF, and ratified his entity's commitment to the improvement of the national statistical system.
JR said that the survey will make it possible to have inputs that support the design and implementation of the policy for the attention to the demographic dynamics.
He also commented that it will provide data to focus attention on groups in conditions of vulnerability and address gaps such as fertility and adolescent pregnancy, early unions and unmet family planning needs.
This newspaper reports that the UNFPA Office in Cuba implements a program that incorporates among its strategies the generation of socio-demographic data including surveys, which contributes to the country's efforts and accompanies the entity in the area of sexual and reproductive health and gender equality and women's empowerment.
The 1st National Fertility Survey of women between 15 and 49 years old was conducted in 1987, which was applied again in 2009 and included women and men between 15 and 54 years old.
