Professor Pedro Kouri Esmeja founded The Institute of Tropical Medicine.

The institution is in charge of protecting the citizens from transmissible diseases, taking actions on their control and / or elimination. It also supports the development of Biological Sciences in general and of the Microbiology, Parasitology and Epidemiology in particular. It collaborate with other countries regarding the fight against tropical, infectious and parasitic diseases

He was born in Puerto Príncipe, Haiti, on Agosto 21st, 1900, some years later he came to Cuba with his parents. He was a prestigious doctor and researcher who worked in several scientific tasks, as well as in the medical journals he created. He developed a commendable professional work in different institutions and was even well known in the international scientific field. He died on October 16th, 1964, in Havana. 

Biological Sciences

They are the ones to study the life and its processes. It is about a branch of the natural sciences that research on the origin, evolution and the properties of the living beings.

Microbiology

It is the study of the microorganisms and their activities. Its objective is to understand the damaging and beneficial activities of the microorganisms and through this understanding, designed the way to increase the benefits and reduce or eliminate the damages.   

Parasitology

 It is the branch of Biology which studies the phenomenon of parasitism. It studies the living parasite organisms and the relation with their hosts and the environment.    

 Epidemiology

It is the branch of the public health that in charge of describing and explaining the dynamic of the population health, allowing the intervention in its natural course.
