Fidel forever

Fidel Castro Ruz had a significant impact on the development of social work in Cuba since the Cuban Revolution in 1959.  It implemented policies that ensured universal access to services such as education and health, which contributed to the social well-being of the population. Institutions and programmes focused on community development were established, promoting the active participation of the community in identifying and resolving their problems. In addition, priority was given to the training of professionals in the field of social work, thus strengthening the professional body in this area.

Under his leadership, specific programmes were implemented for vulnerable groups, such as children, the elderly and persons with disabilities, with the aim of improving the quality of life and promoting social inclusion. An internationalist approach was also promoted, sending Cuban professionals to help in social and humanitarian development in other countries, reflecting a vision of global social work.

In short, the Commander of the Revolution left a legacy marked by advances in social work and community development, bullying with enormous intelligence the challenges and virtue of the Cuban warring people.
