Havana ephemeris. October 20.

1926. Havana was affected by a powerful hurricane.

Known as the cyclone of 26, it first crossed the Isle of Pines, entered the Surgidero de Batabanó, passed through Melena del Sur and continued its march through Quivicán, Managua, Santa María del Rosario until it finally left the north coast of the province of Havana, near Bacuranao. More than 600 deaths caused the intense hurricane.

Its effects were also felt in Pinar del Río, Matanzas and Las Villas. It is estimated that the winds reached 250 kilometers per hour but it was not possible to know what their real intensity was, since the anemometers or equipment to measure the strength of the gusts were destroyed by the atmospheric phenomenon. He punished the capital for ten hours. It damaged around 5,000 buildings, felled 120,000 trees and sank 300 boats. Losses exceeded 100 million pesos.

 

1946. Eduardo Ramos Montes is born in Havana.

He was a composer, arranger, double bass player and guitarist, member and founder of the Sound Experimentation Group of the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry, ICAIC. Later he was musical director of the Pablo Milanés group, as well as President of the Nueva Trova Movement.

His arrangements in musical compositions were characterized by achieving a balance between the group and the solo singers.

He passed away in Havana on March 16, 2018.

 

1980. The Cuban Culture Day is instituted.

The date was established by Decree 70 of the Council of Ministers, in commemoration of one of the most important events that treasures the country's history, the intonation for the first time of the then Anthem of Bayamo, the current Cuban National Anthem, which had been created by Pedro, Perucho, Figueredo.

The anthem was sung by multiple inhabitants of the city when on October 20, 1868, Bayamo was occupied by independence fighters led by Carlos Manuel de Céspedes.

 

1989. The Juan Manuel Márquez Birthplace Museum is founded in Havana.

In the four rooms that make up the installation, the family environment of this martyr of the Cuban Revolution is shown. His stay in the Model Prison and the work he did in defense of the humble when he served as Councilor in the Marianao municipality are also exposed.

In addition, the exhibitions highlight his militancy in the Orthodox Party and the extraordinary link with its leader Eduardo Chibás and the close relationship with Fidel Castro in the organizational and fundraising work for the expedition of the Granma yacht.
