1905. Abelardo Barroso is born in Havana.

He began his artistic life as an interpreter of songs and sones with the Sexteto Habanero. Later he was in other groups.

In the fifties he joined the Sensación orchestra with which he popularized various musical creations.

He recorded numerous albums and performed successfully both on radio and television programs, in theaters and at popular festivals. Through its existence it came to occupy a prominent place in Cuban popular music.

His death occurred in the Cuban capital on September 27, 1972.

 

1925. Colombian José Rogelio Castillo Zúñiga, General of the Cuban Liberation Army, dies in Havana.

He had an outstanding participation in the three stages of the war for the independence of Cuba in the second half of the 19th century.

In the 10 Years War he reached the rank of Commander. He rendered his services to the orders of Vicente García, Calixto García and Jesús Rabi. He was present at the Baraguá Protest.

In the Little War he rose up again and was taken prisoner and sent to prison in Spain and Africa.

He then went to reside in Key West, United States, and joined Cuban émigrés.

In the war restarted in 1895 he fulfilled different responsibilities in the Liberation Army. He was at the head of the Cienfuegos brigade on two occasions and served at the head of the Army Corps General Staff with Máximo Gómez.

Concluded the contest during the republican stage he held the position of Inspector General of Prisons, Prisons and Welfare.

His birth took place on March 19, 1845 in Popayan, Colombia.

 

1928. Raúl Valdés Vivó was born in the Mariel area, then Havana province.

He achieved the title of Doctor in Sociological Sciences, Economist Engineer, Holder of History and Philosophy. He worked as a journalist, diplomat, writer, essayist, polyglot and political figure.

He began his journalistic life at the magazine Mella, which he directed during its clandestine period during the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista.

After the triumph of the Revolution, he directed a national radio newscast, as well as worked on the Television Newscast and was deputy director of the newspaper Hoy.

He collaborated in other publications such as Última Hora, Granma, Bohemia, Union of Journalists of Cuba, Cuba Socialista, Verde Olivo, Unión, La Gaceta de Cuba.

He was a founder of the Communist Party of Cuba and a member of its Central Committee. He held responsibilities in the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and Head of its Department of International Relations.

He served for several years as director of the Superior School of the Ñico López Party.

He passes away on November 9, 2013 at the age of 84. His remains were buried in the pantheon of the Veterans in the Colon Necropolis.

 

1931. Federico Edelmann y Pinto dies in Havana.

His vocation for painting led him to study at the San Alejandro National Academy of Fine Arts, where he won several awards.

He traveled to the United States and dedicated himself to making illustrations for a large publishing house in that country and also worked as a school teacher. He studied assiduously in museums and began to acquire a vast aesthetic culture that he was perfecting until the end of his life.

He managed to create the Annual Hall of Fine Arts for the first time in Cuba, which was inaugurated on February 25, 1916. He also founded the Association of Painters and Sculptors of Cuba, which he sustained against multiple obstacles for ten years. During all this time he organized annual salons that were always artistic and social events.

His birth occurred in Havana on May 26, 1869.

 

1995. The Fernando Ortiz Foundation is created in Havana.

Its main purposes are the study and dissemination of the life and work of that Cuban scholar, as well as the development of scientific research on Cuban cultural identity. It has a scientific advisory council, made up of relevant personalities from science and culture. It also has a large group of collaborators in which researchers, professors and technicians from the most diverse specialties participate.
