 1852.Anacleto Bermúdez Pérez de Corcho dies in Havana.

Born in Havana on July 13, 1806, with the passing of his existence he became one of the most outstanding Cuban jurists in the first half of the 19th century. He was characterized as someone who showed a desire for knowledge. He came to understand that the road to independence could only give Cubans the essential rights to live decently in their own land. A member of the Liceo de La Habana, he participated in conspiratorial activities against the Spanish government, such as the Vuelta Abajo Conspiracy, which was considered by the colonial authorities as one of the best organized of the time, since it greatly shook the monarchical regime.

 

1976. The Higher Institute of Art opens its doors in Havana. The initial structure consisted of three faculties: Music, Plastic Arts and Performing Arts, with three careers that corresponded to the aforementioned faculties.

At the moment, it has four faculties, the three initial ones and the one of Audiovisual Communication Media Arts. Four Teaching Units also work in the provinces, one in Camagüey, two in Holguín and one in Santiago de Cuba.

 

1980. Commander in Chief Fidel Castro delivers a speech at the opening ceremony of the 1980-1981 school year, held at the National Center for Animal Health, in San José de Las Lajas, then Havana province.

He points out:

“This year we inaugurate the school year, but we do not do it in a junior high school in the countryside, or in a vocational school, or in a sports initiation school or in a pedagogical school, or in a technological school, we inaugurate the course in what is, perhaps, one of the most beautiful and fruitful efforts of the Revolution, we inaugurate it in this scientific institution and with this scientific institution”.

 

1991.  Lorenzo Hierrezuelo dies in Havana.

He was one of the members of the duo Los Compadres together with Francisco Repilado, Compay Segundo. Together they achieved success that was a milestone in the history of Cuban popular music. They recorded countless works and appeared in societies, theaters, radio and television programs and toured internationally.

Hierrezuelo did outstanding work as a composer, guitarist and singer. The sonority of his sones and guarachas made him a representative icon of authentic trova from an early age.

His birth took place in Caney, in the then province of Oriente, on September 5, 1907.

 

2006. The prestigious musician Eduardo Richard Egües Martínez dies in Havana.

His birth occurred on October 26, 1924 in the town of Cruces, in the then province of Las Villas. He was for years the flutist of the popular Orquesta Aragón.

He created several cha cha cha that achieved great popularity. He also composed sones montunos that obtained a high level of acceptance and diffusion in Cuba. In addition to his authorial harvest, there are danzones, boleros, guarachas, songs, ballads, guajiras and other genres of Cuban popular music that have been covered by different singers.

His improvisations on the flute became so famous that almost all the flutists of typical orchestras, both in Cuba and abroad, began to follow in his footsteps.

 

2010. Brigadier General Calixto García Martínez dies in Havana.

He was an assailant of the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Barracks in Bayamo, in 1953, and an expeditionary member of the Yacht Granma in 1956.

When the Revolution triumphed, he held important positions as head of the Eastern and Central Armies, of the Rearguard Directorate of the Revolutionary Armed Forces and of the General Staff of the Group of Troops for the Defense of Havana. In 1973 he became the Head of the Military Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba.

For his meritorious revolutionary trajectory and the services rendered to the Homeland, he received numerous decorations and other important recognitions.

His birth took place on the La Tría farm, in the Loa Arabos area, in the then province of Las Villas.
