Colloquium "Getting to know the habanera"

With the purpose of celebrating the Habaneras Festival in Havana, between November 14 and 20 of this year, the National Museum of Music invites you to participate in the Meeting "Getting to know the habanera".

According to information published on the website of the National Museum of Music, musicians, musicologists, pedagogues and other specialists interested in deepening their knowledge of the habanera, one of the founding genres of Cuban music, will be able to participate in the event.

The note refers that the habanera is an expression of our cultural and social roots, from the musical point of view, and is heir to the habanera contradanza that emerged at the end of the 18th century.

He details that it is the first genre created in Havana by black Cuban musicians, who then dominated the arts, as José Antonio Saco pointed out in 1834. Considered one of the most universal of Cuban genres, the rhythms of the habanera have now spread to other genres such as jazz or tango. It arises in the process of formation of the Cuban musical identity.

For this edition of the Colloquium, the topics convened are the following:

"Social and cultural circumstances that led to the emergence of the Havana contradanza".

“The habanera as an expression of Cuban identity. Havananness”.

"Influence of the habanera in various fields and genres".

“Strategies for the preservation and development of the habanera as musical heritage: archives and collections”.

“The critical edition of scores”.

“Currently of the rhythms of the Havanan contradanza and of the Havanan as a vocal genre”.

Those interested in participating as speakers must send their request to the National Music Museum before October 31, 2022. The request will be accompanied by: title of the presentation, summary of a maximum of 250 words and a brief professional file with the data complete and location of the author.
