In Cuba, the first celebration of the date of Parents' Day was held in Havana on June 19, 1938 at the initiative of the writer and artist Dulce María Romero.

She later advocated generalizing this tribute to parents throughout the national territory.

Since the 19th century, José Martí exposed considerations on the transcendence that he attributed to parents.

He, for example, pointed out in a speech delivered in Havana, exactly at the Liceo Artístico y Literario de Guanabacoa, on February 28, 1879:

“Brotherly friends are parents, not ruthless censors. Whip will reap who sows whip: kisses will reap who sows kisses.”

A little more than three years later, in a work published in La Opinion Nacional de Caracas, in its May 19, 1882 edition, he specified: What clouds are more beautiful in the sky than those that gather, wave and rise in the sky? soul of a father who looks at his son?

Martí also stated in the magazine La América, published in New York, in May 1884: "The qualities of the parents remain in the spirit of the children, as the fingers of the child remain in the wings of the fugitive butterfly."

 José Martí not only dealt with parents in a general sense, but also specifically highlighted what he felt for his parent.

Especially in letters addressed to family and friends and in several of his poems, Martí referred to Don Mariano.

Specifically in one of his Versos Sencillos, a group of 46 poems that he wrote in 1890, and published in a book the following year, he stated in a very symbolic way:

                 If they want that from this world

                    carry a fond memory

                    I will carry, deep father

                  Your silver hair.

Beyond a specific day, it is worth recognizing and paying tribute on a daily basis to fathers who, together with mothers, have the great task of contributing to the formation and development of their children.

The new Family Code more than recognizes that father figure. For this reason, this third Sunday in June, the congratulations to the parents serves to summarize in one date, perhaps with greater connotation, what must happen every day and in a very special way that recognition must also become a reality with the grandparents who play such an important role perform in our society, with their experience and fruitful love.

Congratulations to all parents, grandparents, uncles and friends, godparents, to all those father figures who are part of our lives to build us up with lots of love.
