THE DAY OF THE LIBRARIAN IN CUBA AND ANTONIO BACHILLER MORALES

In Cuba, the day of the librarian is celebrated every June 7. This date was chosen to pay homage to Antonio Bachiller y Morales, considered the father of Cuban bibliography.

Bachiller was born on June 7, 1812 in Havana.

In his professional work, he extolled the highest values ​​of science and art in Cuba.

He carried out studies on the Cuban literary movement that were published in newspapers in Havana and Madrid, the capital of Spain.

He, in addition, elaborated the first complete work in bibliographic matter that records our history.

This prolific researcher and writer also served as a professor at the Seminary of San Carlos and the University of Havana and founded the Institute of Secondary Education in the Cuban capital. He was also a member of the Economic Society of Friends of the Country.

After the start of the independence war in 1868, he drafted a proclamation in favor of broad autonomy for Cubans.

This document provoked the wrath of the colonial authorities who threatened him, and even looted his residence, even destroyed his valuable library, and forced him, already an old man, to emigrate.

After several years of exile in Spain and the United States, Antonio Bachiller y Morales returned to Havana, where he died in 1889.

Regarding Antonio Bachiller y Morales, José Martí affirmed that Cuban letters will always be grateful to him for having bequeathed studies, stories and biographies that reflect our historical events in the first half of the 19th century.

Martí described him as an exemplary chronicler, an expert philologist, an archaeologist, an assiduous philosopher, a fair lawyer, a friendly teacher, a diligent writer, and also assured that he was the pride of Cuba.

Since 1950, the day of the librarian began to be celebrated in Cuba, and in Havana specifically, as a tribute to Antonio Bachiller and Morales.

Until June 10, the XIII Conference for the Day of the Cuban Librarian is celebrated in Havana, dedicated on this occasion to the Ada Elba Pérez library and to Havana in general.

This day is also celebrated on the occasion of the 25th anniversaries of the foundation of the House of Poetry and the 40th of the declaration of Havana and its system of fortifications as a World Heritage Site.

In addition to the José Martí National Library and the Rubén Martínez Villena Provincial Library.

Precisely since June 1, the Provincial Library has organized conferences, exhibitions, audiovisual projections and exchanges with cultural personalities
