Workshop on psychosocial accompaniment in emergencies and disasters will be held

As part of the preparation for the next hurricane season, prominent Cuban experts will participate in the Update Workshop for psychosocial support in emergencies and disasters in Cuba, to be held on June 2 at the World Economy Research Center theater.

He informed the Cuban News Agency (ACN), the doctor of Sciences Alexis Lorenzo Ruiz, who will give the conference Update of experiences accumulated in Cuba on psychological and social support in times of COVID-19 and their roles in the hurricane season, stage which in the country takes place from June 1 to November 30.

Sponsored by the Emergency and Disaster Psychology Section of the Cuban Society of Psychology, the program of the scientific meeting includes another dissertation related to the Main messages of the sixth report of the Intergovernmental Panel of Experts on Climate Change, by the doctor in Economic Sciences Ramón Pichs Madruga, Researcher and Full Professor; Full Member of the Cuban Academy of Sciences and director of the World Economy Research Center.

Likewise, the Doctor of Science José M. Rubiera Torres, Researcher and Full Professor, and also Full Member of the Cuban Academy of Sciences, will delve into climate change and historical meteorological phenomena in the country.

The ACN highlights Lorenzo Ruiz who has been dedicated to the issue of disasters for more than 30 years, in 1990 he participated in the Cuban program for the care of children who lived in areas affected by the Chernobyl accident, which began its activities on March 29, that year, as a response from the Cuban government to requests from social organizations of the former Soviet Union and work was carried out uninterruptedly until November 24, 2011, he recalled.

Regarding this work, the also master's degree in Health Psychology, valued it as very positive to learn from those more than 25 thousand people that we attended in Cuba; a much higher number in Ukraine, Russia and Belarus, and recalled that he also served as coordinator of the mental health team of the Henry Reeve Contingent in the Haiti earthquake.

The ACN highlights that Lorenzo Ruiz's intense service record includes training in all provinces of the country, and accompaniment in many nations of Latin America and the Caribbean.
