1877. Juan Tomás Roig Mesa is born in Santiago de las Vegas, in Havana.

He was an outstanding scientist, expert, chemist and agronomist, author of works and works of great importance for botany and medicine, among them, a botanical dictionary of Cuban names and a monograph about medicinal, aromatic and poisonous plants of Cuba. He distinguished himself for his work in the natural sciences, both in research and in teaching, which allowed him to stand out as one of the most eminent botanists in Cuba, recognized by national and foreign institutions. He dedicated his life to studying the environment in Cuba and searching for new sources of natural wealth. His greatest contribution to science is his studies on medicinal plants.

In the last stage of his existence he worked at the Tropical Research Institute of the Cuban Academy of Sciences. For his work he received awards and decorations, including Honorary Member of the Cuban Society of Botany and Natural History "Felipe Poey", respectively, the Gold Medal of the Geographical Society of Cuba, the National Order of Merit "Carlos Manuel de Céspedes” and the title of Doctor Honoris Causa in Agricultural Engineering awarded by the University of Havana.

He had a long life, he died at the age of 93, on February 20, 1971 in Santiago de las Vegas.

 

2014. Eugenio Rafael George Lafitta dies, an outstanding volleyball player and coach for more than 30 years of the women's national volleyball team.

From a very young age he was interested in the practice of volleyball. In 1947 he joined the training organized under the advice of Jacinto del Cueto Fernández better known as Tito Cueto, considered the Father of Cuban volleyball. Because of his tenacity, he was chosen for the national team as an assistant hitter. He participated in the Pan American Games in Mexico in 1955 and Chicago in 1959 and the Central American and Caribbean Games in Jamaica in 1962. The following year he took the reins of the junior men's volleyball team, in which he created the foundations for the group to become become champion of the X Central American and Caribbean Games in Puerto Rico in 1966.

He was one of the initiators of the world projection of the Cuban Volleyball School in 1968. In that same year he assumed the technical direction of the women's team qualified as the Morenas del Caribe. The teams coached by Eugenio George won the gold medal at the Olympic Games, World Championships, Grand Prix World Cups, Pan American Games, and Central American and Caribbean Games.

Due to his sports career, he was selected as the Best Coach of the 20th century in the world by the International Volleyball Federation and a member of the Hall of Fame.

He was awarded in the country the title of National Hero of Labor of the Republic of Cuba.

His birth took place on February 22, 1935, in the city of Baracoa.
