1987. The Cuban History Institute is founded in Havana.

It arose as a result of the merger of several institutions that preceded it: the Department of Cuban History of the Institute of History of the Cuban Academy of Sciences, founded in 1962; the Institute of History of the Communist Movement and the Socialist Revolution of Cuba, created in 1972 and the Center for the Study of Military History.

The Institute is located in the Aldama Palace located at 510 Amistad Street between Reina and Estrella, in the Centro Habana municipality.

This building is part of the architectural heritage of Havana as it is the greatest exponent of the neoclassical style.

The Institute has a specialized library, named "Carlos del Toro" in honor of the outstanding work carried out by that researcher. This library has a collection of approximately 60,000 volumes, including books, brochures and periodicals from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. It also has documentation in digital format and microfiches, all referring to the themes History of Cuba and General History.

This institution also has laboratories and workshops in which the conservation of the valuable documentary and bibliographic sources available to the Institute's library and archive is guaranteed. Likewise, the Institute has the Historia publishing house that has published multiple significant books.
