Havana anniversaries. May 2nd.

1925.  Major General of the Mambí Army José Miró Argenter dies in Havana.

He was a chronicler of the war for independence initiated in 1868 by Carlos Manuel de Céspedes and of the one restarted in 1895, which had Major General Máximo Gómez Báez as its General in Chief. Because of Miró's precise and detailed research, the Cuban nation has valuable information about the diverse events, episodes and personalities that made up the relevant history of the 19th century. For his revolutionary merits, he was a member of the General Staff of the Mambi forces led by Lieutenant General Antonio Maceo y Grajales.

The best fruit of his intellectual work was the testimonial work "Cuba: Chronicles of the war", published for the first time in Santiago de Cuba.

His birth took place on March 4, 1851 in the city of Stigers, region of Catalonia, in Spain.

1957.  The outstanding painter Carlos Enriquez Galope dies in Havana at the age of 56.

He was part of the group of Cuban painters who around 1925 broke away from the purely academic to create a new style. In 1939, after receiving a small inheritance from his father, he acquired a piece of land in the neighborhood of Párraga, Havana, where he built a wooden house surrounded by trees. A large part of the intellectuals of the time used to go there, among others, Felix Pita Rodriguez, Alejo Carpentier, Nicolas Guillen, Rene Portocarrero and Juan Marinello.  At present, there is a suggestive museum identified as "El Hurón Azul", where personal objects and works of the artist can be seen.
