Road accidents, a health problem in Cuba

The main elements that influenced the occurrence of accidents were associated with not paying due attention to vehicle control, not respecting the right of way, violating speed limits, technical malfunctions and driving under the influence of alcohol, which together accounted for 76.8% of accidents, 80% of fatalities and 78.1% of injuries.

Yipsy Soca, communicator of the National Road Safety Commission explains that the average age of those killed in road accidents in Cuba is between 40 and 50 years old.

"If we analyze it in relation to the average life expectancy in Cuba, it is analyzed that those who perish lose about 30 years of life due to causes associated with traffic accidents," she says.

Due to the serious physical and psychological consequences for those involved in these events as well as for their families, road accidents are identified as a health problem.

Related to this issue, we also work on active and passive safety, linked to safety inside a vehicle, safety on the roads as well as human behavior, he says.

He also refers that these pillars declared by the plan of action of the second decade of the world public health plan are worked on, which implies the response after an accident and in this aspect all the topics related to health and behaviors and good manners to act in the event of a traffic accident, the immediate attention after the event and hospital care are linked.

The promotion of a responsible road culture and the state of the streets, avenues and highways are issues on which work must be increased, which is evidenced by the increase in fatalities among moped users, a vehicle that according to Reinaldo Becerra Acosta, secretary of the National Road Safety Commission "will produce an increase of about 350,000 vehicles circulating on our roads".

To which must be added the statistic that in the last five years the vehicle fleet maintained a growth of 1.73% and in 2021, with the insertion of motorcycles and mopeds, the figure rose to 5.5%, according to figures provided to the press by the CNSV.

It is also noteworthy that a large part of the fatalities caused by road accidents in Cuba and the world correspond to pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.

It is regrettable that the trend in the reduction of road accident rates, with its figures of injuries and fatalities in the Greater Antilles does not reach the proposed goal.

During 2021, more than 70% of the provinces increased accidents and deaths.

Havana, Matanzas, Sancti Spíritus and Ciego de Ávila increased in all three indicators, while Guantánamo was the only one to register a decrease.
