Success of pediatric vaccination in Cuba is highlighted

The pediatric vaccination campaign in Cuba has been a success. Experts and scientists who participated in a new meeting with the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party and President of the Republic Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez agreed with this statement.

Radio Metropolitana reports that during the encouraging day, the application of the booster dose in children was announced; this clinical trial proposal is in the evaluation stage by the Center for State Control of Medicines, Equipment and Medical Devices (Cecmed).

Dr. Vicente Vérez Bencomo, general director of the Finlay Vaccine Institute, explained the impact of the study on the duration and quality of the immune response in the pediatric population.

If we consider the two impact evaluations -said the scientist- we would be talking that the number of positive cases we have avoided is between 51 thousand and almost 70 thousand cases.

That is the direct impact of having carried out this vaccination campaign which, in the case of the pediatric population, was a very close campaign in terms of time, since each of the doses was executed in three weeks, which started on September 5 and ended before November 15, said Vérez Bencomo.

He added that "we are talking about a campaign that reached more than five million doses applied, with very few adverse effects".

About the duration of the antibody response, between six and seven months, after vaccination, Doctor of Science Vicente Vérez exemplified with the results achieved when applying the booster dose to a group of children who participated in the Soberanía Pediatría trial.

"In order to have all the evidence and all the data necessary to make the decisions that the country had to make, as to whether or not to reinforce the pediatric population, an important group of children in the clinical trial received a booster dose of Soberana Plus. Actually, after the booster, all the pediatric population that received it is in better conditions than after the first vaccination", said the Director General of the Finlay Institute.

As part of the Cuban anti-COVID-19 vaccination strategy, Doctor of Science Dagmar García Rivera, Research Director of the Finlay Institute of Vaccines, acknowledged the altruism and courage of Cuban children and adolescents who contributed to saving the country by participating in the pediatric clinical trials.

Then, at the Palace of the Revolution, also headed by President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez and directed by Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz, with the presence of Vice President of the Republic Salvador Valdés Mesa, the meeting of the Temporary Working Group of the Government for the confrontation of COVID-19 was held.

According to reports from all the territories by videoconference, this week could be similar to the previous one, where the intensity of the transmission decreased.
