Significant dates of Havana. April 13th

National Day of the Psychologists

A great amount of scientific and cultural activities are carried out this day throughout the country to celebrate the date. The date was chosen in commemoration of Enrique José Varona who was born on April 13th, 1849 in Villa Santa María del Puerto del Príncipe, nowaday, Camaguey.

He endorsed the scientific disemination of Psicology with his profesional work and sistematized the Psicology teaching as a Subject in the teaching staff of the Superior and Medium Education in the country.

1929. Fernando Figueredo Socarrás dies in Havana.

His birth took place at Santa María del Puerto del Principe, currently Camaguey, on February 9th, 1846.

He incorporated himself to the Liberator Army at the begining of the war for the indepence of 1868, during Bayamo´s raid.  His character´s affinity with Carlos Manuel de Céspedes led him to take charges of great responsability and significance in the Army: Secretary of the Council, Chancelor, Chief  of the Body of Assistants, and virtually, Cespedes´s prívate secretary.

He fervorously rejected the Pact of Zanjón, which he qualified as the most inglorious event ever occurred and led by the insurgent army.

He inmediatelly headed to general       Antonio Maceo´s camp, with whom starred on March 15th 1878 the stunning Protest of Baraguá, against the peace without indepence and the abolition of the slavery.

He was a distinguished member of the Academy of History and dedicated his last years of life to the historian´s work .
