Havana anniversaries. April 10.

Por José Pérez – Galdós Ortiz

1959.  In Havana begins to circulate "Verde Olivo", a publication that would be the organ of the Revolutionary Armed Forces.

From the stage of the liberation struggle, Comandante Ernesto Che Guevara pays special attention to the creation and development of the necessary means of diffusion to spread the revolutionary ideas. In this sense, he gave his support for the creation of "Verde Olivo" which was initially published as a tabloid and later became a magazine. In 1959 Che began to collaborate with this publication with works related to his experiences of the tour he made through Asian countries.

1969.   Fernando Ortiz dies in Havana.

He was born in the Cuban capital on July 16, 1881. In his professional career he became a lawyer and also practiced journalism, but above all he stood out for having been a keen student of the Afro-Cuban historical and cultural roots. His work reveals his political and sociolinguistic concerns. He became aware of many features of Cuban culture that until then had been distorted or attributed to uncertain motives, and which constitute a valuable heritage of the black presence in the country. Thus, he formulated the concept of transculturation, that is to say, the mixture of different roots in a single trunk or nation, which constituted one of his fundamental contributions.

He was a scientist of very wide spectrum, although his most significant contribution was in the sphere of ethnography and he was the main promoter of Afro-Cuban studies in the 20th century. For his outstanding work he was called the Third Discoverer of Cuba.
