Havana anniversaries. April 6th.

1835.   José Agustín Caballero y Rodríguez de la Barrera dies in Havana.

He was born in the Cuban capital on August 28, 1762.  He began his studies at the Seminary of San Carlos de La Habana at the age of twelve, a center that would later become the stage of his entire life. There he studied Philosophy, graduated as Bachelor of Arts and later in Theology.

As a philosopher and professor, his writings reflected his concern for the backwardness of Cuba in education, science and enlightenment. He advocated for the reform and freedom of education on the island, as well as for the teaching of the mother tongue.

According to José de la Luz y Caballero, he was one of the pioneers in promoting the development of literature and patriotism in the country.

 

2011.   Actor, writer and theater director Héctor Quintero Viera dies in Havana.

He was born on October 1, 1942 in the Cuban capital. Throughout his life he was part of renowned theater companies in the country, among others, the Conjunto Dramático Nacional, Teatro Estudio and the Teatro Musical de La Habana, where he served as General Director for twelve years.

His first major premiere was the play Contigo pan y cebolla in 1964.

He was considered one of the most important authors of the Cuban stage with an intense artistic career in theater, radio, television and cinema, with works as writer, actor, director, producer, singer, declaimer, program presenter and narrator.  In 2004 he was awarded the National Theater Award.
