Havana Anniversaries. March 15th

1812.  In the area of the Peñas Altas sugar mill, in Guanabo, Havana, José Antonio Aponte, leader of a national abolitionist conspiracy, rises up.

He was born in Havana in 1760, in the neighborhood of Guadalupe, today belonging to the Centro Habana Municipality.  He was a black Creole, free man, carpenter, carver, cabinetmaker and leader of the first national conspiracy recorded in the history of Cuba.  His first objective was to achieve the abolition of slavery, although in the evolution of his thought, he would join this idea to that of the independence of Cuba.

His death occurred on April 9, 1812 when he was hanged without trial along with other free blacks.

1896.  Juan Cristóbal Gundlach dies in Havana.

His birth took place in the city of Hamburg, Germany, on July 17, 1810. He settled in Cuba and was the creator of the first zoological museum that existed in the Cuban territory. He belonged to the Economic Society of Friends of the Country of Havana, the Matanzas Lyceum, the Royal Academy of Medical, Physical and Natural Sciences of Havana and the Natural History Societies of Madrid, Boston and Montreal.

His scientific work was enormous in the field of zoological research. His contributions were reflected in his works on mammals, birds, insects, reptiles and mollusks. At present, a large number of genera, species and subspecies of vertebrates originally described by him are still in force, as well as a large number of specimens of zoological and botanical fauna named in his honor.
