March 13: the university becomes Revolution

By Elena Godinez Dalmau

March is a month of history, a month in which the university becomes Revolution and students remember with admiration who was and always will be one of the greatest leaders of the University Student Federation: José Antonio Echeverría Bianchi, a young FEU with revolutionary ideas that would materialize in every action in which he participated.

Student, President of the FEU and general secretary of the Revolutionary Directorate, an organization that counted with courageous young people, who together with José Antonio, starred in one of the most important events in the history of Cuba: The Assault on the Presidential Palace and the Seizure of Radio Reloj.

On March 13, 1957, at the seat of government and dictator Fulgencio Batista, the action was carried out, which would be supported by demonstrations throughout the city. José Antonio Echeverría's group also had the mission to take Radio Reloj and call the people to the struggle, with courage and tenacity they accomplished their objectives, but Batista fled from his den.

Once the Radio Reloj station was taken, they suffered a surprise attack by Batista's police forces. The FEU and the Revolutionary Directorate saw the fall of their eternal leader, the one who would sign together with Fidel the Letter of Mexico and defend the rights of the student body to the point of exhaustion. Today all Cuba remembers his legacy.

Cuban youth wields that phrase that José Antonio Echeverría mentioned before his death as a symbol of Revolution: "If we fall, may our blood point the way to freedom".
