Havana anniversaries. March 13

1957. A group of young members of the Revolutionary Directorate attack the Presidential Palace in an attempt to execute the dictator Fulgencio Batista. At the same time the leader of the Directorate José Antonio Echeverria occupied the radio station Radio Reloj, through which he broadcast a communiqué detailing the objectives of the action that was being carried out in the Cuban capital. When he left the radio station and headed towards the University of Havana, he fell in a confrontation with members of the dictatorial regime's forces in one of the streets parallel to the aforementioned educational facility. The place where José Antonio Echeverría fell was declared a National Monument after the triumph of the Revolution and there is a plaque there that pays homage to this prestigious student leader and revolutionary fighter.

1957.  Dr. Pelayo Cuervo Navarro, an outstanding leader of the Cuban People's Party, is assassinated in the Laguito area of Havana.

After a brutal beating by members of the armed forces of Fulgencio Batista's tyranny, his elimination was part of the repression unleashed against opponents of the dictatorship after the assault on the Presidential Palace.

He was born in the city of Baracoa, in the current province of Guantánamo, on September 19, 1901.
