Havana anniversaries. March 12th

1969.  The outstanding Cuban musician and composer Ignacio Piñeiro Martínez dies in Havana.

He was born on May 21, 1888 in the neighborhood of Jesús María in the Cuban capital. He was influenced since his childhood by various rituals of African origin.  He was also in contact with rumba and achieved great fame as a natural rumbero.

In 1906 he formed part of the first group of claves and guaguancó called "El Timbre de Oro" with which his triumphant artistic career began.

His work as a composer included various genres, among them, son montuno, guaguancó, guajira, guaracha, rumba, danzón and other musical modalities.  In a special way he stood out for being a great sonero. Precisely in one of his works he said: "...son is the most sublime thing for the soul to enjoy".

1982.    The Carlos J. Finlay Detachment was established in Havana, in honor of the eminent Cuban scholar who discovered the agent that transmitted yellow fever.

Many of these young people, once graduated as doctors, have rendered their services in many latitudes of the world, exalting the profession, solidarity and the homeland, with sacrifice and selflessness.
