Havana anniversaries. March 11.

1957.   Gustavo Robreño Puente dies in Havana.

He was born in the city of Pínar del Río on December 18, 1873. From the stage of his childhood, only when he was five years old, he made his debut as an actor in a children's company directed by Justo Soret. From then on, his life was entirely related, in one way or another, to the so-called world of the stage.

His name is registered in the history of Cuban theater, which was part of a family that contributed a lot to the development of this artistic manifestation in our country in the first half of the twentieth century.  He was among the founders in 1900 of the Alhambra Theater in Havana. He wrote more than 200 plays, most of them in collaboration with his brother Francisco, but among the most popular ones are some titles that by themselves illustrate the themes: La madre de los tomates, Toros y gallos, El jipijapa, El ciclón and Napoleón y la emperatriz del Pilar.

1974.   The outstanding trade union leader Lázaro Peña González dies in Havana.

He was born in the Cuban capital on May 29, 1911. He served for several years, and in different periods, as General Secretary of the Central de Trabajadores de Cuba. He actively participated in the struggle to organize workers against the dictatorship of Gerardo Machado. He was arrested by the police and had to face repression and was imprisoned several times.  In the face of all the divisive maneuvers he was a constant fighter for workers' unity.

He was considered a master of union cadres and was also qualified as Captain of the Cuban Working Class.

After the triumph of the Revolution, he also held the position of General Secretary of the Central de Trabajadores de Cuba.
