Havana anniversaries. March 8th.

International Women´s Day.

It was celebrated on March 8th, 1931.The event took place in the Centro Obrero in La Habana and was organized by the Central Obrera de Cuba and

 the Federación Obrera de La Habana and all women working in different workshops, shops and factories in the city were invited.

The date was women´s complain for decades. Since the triumph of the revolution the activities developed this day are full of happiness and recognition to women.

 

1941.   Josefina Méndez is born in Havana.

She started studying ballet since 7 years old with Fernando Alonso and Alberto Alonso, among other professors. She started her professional life on March 27, 1955. She joined the most important Cuban ballet Company in the fifties and was first dancer in the sixties.

She was recognized as one of the Cuatro Joyas (Four Jewels) of the National Ballet of Cuba, according to the name given by the English critic Arnold Haskell in 1967.She was awarded several national and international prizes: The Premio Nacional de la Danza, the Orden Félix Varela and the Premio del Gran Teatro de La Habana, among others.

She died on January 26th, 2007 in Havana.
