Havana anniversaries. February 26th.

1926.  The Cultural Foundation for Bilnd People Varona Suárez, what is today School Abel Santamaría is opened in Havana.

The Center was created by a board of ladies and developed outstanding professionals and technicians in different fields.

The first library in Braille system in the country was openend in this place in 1943 and in the fiftees an orchestra of 13 visually impaired musicians was organized, it was named Cuban Jazz. There other artistic groups founded by this institution.

That school was the only one in the country in 1959 and was sustained by a collection of public money until 1961when the government started to cover the costs.

Today there are several especial schools in Cuba in all the provinces and in the municipality of Isla de la Juventud.     

 

1993.  The Museum of Tobacco is opened in the Historical center of Havana.

It is located in a XVIII century building that initially belonged to Bartolomé Luque´s family. The cultural institution has three exhibition rooms, two entrance halls and a Casa del Habano, which was opened in May 1994 and is unique just because it is in the museum.

 

It is the only institution in Cuba designed to preserve and show collections linked to the culture created by Tobacco and exhibit tools to work with the leaves, pipes, lighters and other things associated to the art of smoking. It also exhibits a vast collection of lithography stones and prestigious cigar labels.
