Havana Anniversaries. February 25th.

1802.  Juan José Díaz de Espada arrives in Havana.

Since he arrived in Havana he asked to join the Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País. In the same meeting for his request he was asigned the position of Director, what let him influence the reforms of the society of the island. It is said that Espada took part in every work taking place. Some of them are: Naval Academy of Regla, the first Botanical Garden of la Habana, la Agriculture Academy, the Academy of Painting San Alejandro and the Academy of Midwives in Paula.

 

He was Bishop in La Habana. He founded the cemetery identified with his name. He helped to achieve the vaccination against smallpox in Cuba and the establishment of the prohibition of the burials in the churches.

 

1994 Jorge Enrique Mendoza dies in Havana.

He was born in Camagüey on November 2nd, 1930 and started his political life in his town as a student leader. He was a member of the Juventud Ortodoxa and politically active in Movimiento 26 de julio.

He joined the Ejército Rebelde and was one of the newscaster of Radio Rebelde during the national liberation fights. After the triumph of the Revolution he developed different responsabilities as: Director of Newspaper Granma and President of the Instituto de Historia de Cuba.

He was well known because of his integrity, honesty and generosity as well as his loyalty to the people and to the revolution causes.
