Havana anniversaries. February 16.

1879.    Julián Barreto is born in Havana.

He began his musical studies with the flute. Later he studied violin with Juan Torroella. For some time he taught violin at the Municipal Academy of Havana and was a member of the Municipal Band of Music. In 1926 he traveled to Spain and France where he gave concerts of Cuban popular music. Later he returned to Cuba where he founded a music academy in the Havana neighborhood of La Víbora. He was a violinist in several typical orchestras.

He was inspired by José Urfé's musical work "El bombín de Barreto", to turn it into the first danzón with montuno or more lively part.

1936.   Manuel Cofiño is born in Havana.

He became one of the most widely read Cuban writers and translated into other languages. Many of his stories have the name of a woman as a title. A very significant work is the novel entitled "La última mujer y el próximo combate" (The Last Woman and the Next Combat) with which he won the Casa de las Américas prize in 1971.  This novel was later translated into more than 25 languages.

He had a relatively short existence since he died in Havana on April 8, 1987 when he was only 51 years old and enjoyed a recognized prestige both nationally and internationally.
