Havana anniversaries. February 8

1981.  María Cervantes, daughter of Ignacio Cervantes, considered by many the most outstanding Cuban musician of the 19th century, dies in Havana.

She was born in Havana on November 30, 1885.  She was attracted to art from an early age. She was enthusiastic about dancing and used to dance to the rhythm of the musical creations her father played on the piano.

Throughout her life, her authentic Cuban identity, her personal sympathy and her special charisma to interpret her songs, helped her to win the admiration and affection of her people.

On his 90th birthday, in an interview with a journalist from Radio Habana Cuba, he said: "I would have liked to retire from the radio, from the theater, and to be remembered as I was, without glasses, without gray hair, without old age. But there was a second great debut that does not weigh on me, because if I had really retired, I would have died already. Music is my life."

2005.  Lázaro Ross dies in Havana.

He was born in the Santos Suarez neighborhood of the Cuban capital on May 11, 1925. He was qualified as the Cuban Akpwon, and considered king of the Yoruba songs in our country. The African rites identified him as OchaNiwe.

Throughout his life he felt himself a very fulfilled man and was always grateful for the great possibilities that were opened to him when a Revolution took place in Cuba.

For his meritorious work he received, among other decorations, the Felix Varela Order of the first degree and above all the affection and respect of his people and of audiences from different parts of the world.

When he passed away his cortege was a demonstration of the recognition and admiration of the people for this singular artist. The transfer of his body from the funeral home to the Colon Cemetery took more than two hours and the funeral march was intertwined with songs, rites and dances.
