Bernarda Toro Pelegrín, "Manana", dies.

She was born in the town of Jiguaní, in the then province of Oriente, on August 20, 1852. She was the wife of Máximo Gómez. When the generalissimo, in 1895, left with José Martí for Cuba to lead the Liberation Army, she stayed in Santo Domingo to take care of their children. On one occasion the Cuban delegation in New York offered her economic help and her response was categorical: "We who have given everything to the Homeland, we do not have time to take care of the material needs of existence! You should not spend with us what is needed to buy gunpowder!"
