Cándido Hoyos Huguet was born in the town of Tapaste, Havana.

During his professional career, after graduating as a medical doctor, he was assistant professor of Hygiene and Legal Medicine at the University of Havana, president of the Provincial Council and governor, both of Havana from 1904 to 1906. He was among the founders of the School of Arts and Crafts of Havana and creator of different scholarships. He was a member of the Sociedad Económica Amigos del País.  In his literary production he published several books. The following titles stand out: "Establishment of Provincial Agricultural Farms for Degenerate Children", "Education of Children's Language", "Role of the Physician in the Periodical Postal Press" and "Finlay's Discovery from the Social Point of View".

It is a town that belongs to the municipality of San José de las Lajas in Mayabeque province. It was founded on March 11, 1788. It has a territorial extension of 147 square kilometers and a population of more than ten thousand inhabitants. The region is made up of 12 districts and 5 population settlements, one urban and four rural.

Havana School of Arts and Crafts

The school was founded in 1882 by the pedagogue Fernando Aguado y Rico. It was the first school of arts and crafts in the American continent. At the beginning, students learned carpentry, masonry, stonemasonry, lathe work, foundry work, drawing, among others.  The center is located in the neighborhood of Los Sitios in the municipality of Centro Habana. At present, this center offers courses in computer science, secretarial work, library science and document management.
