Revitalization of peripheral localities of Marianao

Last Sunday morning the Zimba neighborhood of the Zamora-Cocosolo People´s Council, was the epicenter of an exchange of the population with Antonio Torres Iríbar, first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba in the province and Reinaldo García Zapata, Governor of the City.

Accompanied by Teresa Amarelle Boué, member of the Political Bureau and general secretary of the Federation of Cuban Women (FMC, Federación de Mujeres Cubanas), and Marta Elena Felto Cabrera, Minister of Labor and Social Security (Ministerio de Trabajo y Seguridad Social), the group confirmed the work carried out so far in correspondence with the proposals of the residents of the territory.

The panorama is changing and the dialogue flows towards issues such as the pruning of a leafy tree that was obstructing the power lines, the cleaning of the Quibú River- an important tributary that originates in Boyero, crossing La Lisa, Marianao and drains into the sea in the municipality of Playa, and where the bad polluting practices suffered by this flow with the dumping of wastes from the industrial residential sector were visible.

For years the Quibú River has been converted into a dumping ground and a polluting tributary.

Many houses in this People´s Council of the municipality of Marianao are located on the banks of this river.

During the dialogue it was learned about the management of a kiosk, considering that two years ago the neighborhood lost the few places destined to the sale of food and the repair of the premises of the System of Attention to the Family was concluded. The authorities talked about the importance of a deep transformation of the dynamics and peculiarities of the neighborhood and the necessity of integrating to work whose who are apt and to train those who still do not have the necessary skills for the production and service functions guided to social welfare.

Authorities also visited Mi Cocosolo bakery where the quality of the products was verified and where residents claimed that this visible quality of the bread was related to the check-up visit of the group, otherwise bread would be uneatable.

Torres Iríbar highlighted the need to influence by actions to solve this complaints of the population that are so sensitive, as for example, difficulties with the legalization of houses, and insisted on the search of methods of good practices to meet the needs of those who expect solutions that allow then to sustain social life of their neighborhoods with the pride of identifying themselves, to be included in this program meant to bring happiness.

The tour continued the Juan Manuel Márquez Sports Complex, of the Pocito-Palmar People´s Council, where workers of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER, Instituto Nacional de Deporte, Educacion Física y Recreación) are involved in reconstructive actions, who expressed the need to rescue the facility to become a quarry for athletes as it was in past decades.

Although they are currently working tirelessly to get this facility ready, there is still a lack of cohesion and firmness to move forward with the project. The authorities observed the a recently repaired school and perceived the influence of the many small self –employed businesses that provide products and supplies for home consumption.

They also visited the Pocitin project, which will have a multipurpose area, playground, a ranchon and much more. They were able to appreciate the restoration of the 27 de Noviembre Polyclinic, where the first secretary of the Communist Party od Cuban had his blood pressure measured and after that he shared selfies with the nurses and doctors of this primary health care center.

The visit showed that these spaces are necessary to oxygenate the daily work of these vulnerable communities, putting our hearts into this endeavor.

Exchanged happened at the 27 de Noviembre Polyclinic of the People´s Council El Palmar.
