Odilio Urfé is born in the town of Madruga.

In his professional career he became an outstanding musical researcher and also a great musician. Since he was a child he played as a percussionist in the musical band of Madruga. Later he graduated in violin, flute and later in piano. He was part of several groups and was also the creator of the Orquesta Popular de Conciertos. He also founded in 1949 the (Folkloric Research Institute), an institution that developed a relevant work for several years. In October 1959 he organized and directed the Cuban Folkloric Festival and in 1962 the first Cuban popular music festival. He carried out a very important work regarding the salvation for posterity of the music of Sindo Garay, Eliseo y Emilio, Grenet, Ernesto Lecuona and other outstanding composers.

Institute of Folkloric Research

It was founded in 1949 with the purpose of rescuing, compiling, classifying, studying, disseminating and defending all manifestations of the heritage of Cuban musical culture.
