Cuba is selected by the UNESCO to be part of the committee to promote cultural diversity

Cuba was selected on Friday to be part of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, a UNESCO body made up of 24 countries.

The selection of the island took place at the General Assembly of Parties to the 2005 Convention to Promote and Protect Cultural Diversity, a virtual forum that happened from Tuesday to Friday, and where the multilateral organization renewed half of its members.

UNESCO's specialized committee promotes the materialization of the objectives of the 2005 Convention and monitors its implementation, with members serving a four-year mandate.

It also supports policies and actions aimed at the creation, production, distribution and access to cultural goods and services, enhancing the role of culture for sustainable development.

Cuba's ambassador to UNESCO, Yahima Esquivel, expressed her gratitude for the trust placed in her country and ratified its commitment to the Convention.

In a brief speech, the diplomat underlined the support of the Cuban State to the objective of fostering and promoting the development of culture in all its manifestations on the basis of freedom of artistic creation, and the defense of the identity of the largest Antillean island. Also, to the preservation of cultural heritage and the artistic and historical wealth of the nation.
