The Alicia Alonso Great Theatre of Havana is the new headquarter of the National Dance Museum

The National Dance Museum is dedicated to the sublime dancer Alicia Alonso, and it is located on the intersection of Linea and G, in Vedado. This museum will be moved to the Great Theatre of Havana which is named after that great dancer.

This institution, only of its kind in Cuba, is directed by the Cuban critique and editor Pedro Simón Martínez. This one was conceived by the founder of the Cuban National Ballet and by the prima ballerina assoluta Alicia Alonso. It was inaugurated in 1988, when the company celebrated five decades of its creation.

The National Dance Museum is methodologically subordinated to the National Heritage Council. It contains a large collection of photographs, engravings, manuscripts, rare bibliographic editions, sculptures and paintings, among other objects that allow us to move through different centuries of the universal history of dancing.

In its previous headquarters, the halls of the National Dance Museum were specialized in themes related to Alicia Alonso and the memoires of her long and successful artistic career, also the 19th century, the Russian ballet, the Romantic age, dancing in the Havana pro-art musical society, dancing in plastic arts, and other topics.

At the eclectic mansion on Línea and G, the visitor also used to find transitory exhibits about various tropics.

The National Dance Museum has a documentation center, a specialized library, numerous films, recordings, diverse information formats, and a significant archive of voices of personalities related to the world of dancing.

Since its foundation in the past century, this institution has been enriched with an enlightening private collection that belonged to Alicia Alonso, an important set of historic clothes and scenographic elements of the Cuban National Ballet, and other valuable donations of private collectors from Cuba and abroad.

The decision of moving the National Dance Museum from the intersection of Línea and G, in Vedado, to the Alicia Alonso Great Theatre of Havana, was approved in the annual meeting of the National Heritage Council.
