Office of the Historian of Havana thanks international contribution to the museums and fortress system of Cuba

The system of fortresses of the foundational towns of Cuba stands out for its high degree of preservation among its similar ones in Latin America. This year, the fortifications of Havana celebrate the 40th anniversary of its declaration as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

According to Habana Radio, due to its importance for the historical memory of Cuba and the rest of the world, there are many actions that are generated to contribute to its management and conservation. In this sense, the Association of Friends of Montjuïc Castle, from Barcelona, Spain, has donated six computers to the museum-fortresses of the heritage cities of Cuba, one of the most recent shows of support received by that organization.

Two of these computers have been received for the management of the Castillos de la Real Fuerza and San Salvador de la Punta respectively; while the rest were distributed to the Castillo San Severino Museum (Matanzas), the Jagua Museum (Cienfuegos), the San Pedro de la Roca Museum (Santiago de Cuba) and the Fort Matachín Museum (Baracoa).

To thank this donation that favors the infrastructure and operation of these heritage institutions, a ceremony was held at the Office of the Historian of the City of Havana, which was attended by representatives of the Network of Offices of the Conservator and the Historian of the Heritage Cities of Cuba, as well as the International Cooperation Directorate of the Office of the Historian of the City of Havana (OHCH).

Antonio Quevedo, Director of the Complex of Archaeological Museums and Fortresses of the OHCH recognized "the Association and its President Carmen Fusté, for their constant collaboration with the Office not only towards the fortification system but also with respect to humanitarian issues", specifically in the care of vulnerable and elderly people served by the Convent of Belén, in Havana.

For several years, the Association of Friends of Montjuïc Castle has collaborated with Cuba in the organization and development of workshops and exhibitions related to the restoration and conservation of these monumental complexes, as well as access to documentary archives preserved in Spain, as was the case of the revision of the plans of the Castle of Atarés, whose contribution was fundamental for its restoration.
