Havana ephemeris. September 14.

1874. Gabriel Cubría Puig is born in the town of Alquizar, then province of Havana.

He began to study medicine at the University of Havana in the academic year of 1891-92. He reached in 1899 the title of Doctor of Medicine and Surgery. He began working at the Hospital General de la Caridad in the Guanabacoa area, a center that had been created on April 5, 1856.

In 1905 he was appointed director of said hospital and the following year, exactly on July 3, 1906, he had to attend to the patient Ángela Rodríguez y González, who, in addition to the symptoms of childbirth, presented other complications. To these serious inconveniences was added another no less important; there were two fetuses in the womb of the young woman. The only possible option was surgical intervention and there was no experience to practice it. In his capacity as surgeon, he managed to make a precise cut and they extracted the two creatures, a male and a female. This became a milestone in Cuban medicine in that early stage of the twentieth century.

His death occurred in Guanabacoa, Havana, on September 30, 1958.

 

1913. Alberto Ruiz is born in Havana.

His artistic life began at the end of the thirties as a vocalist in typical orchestras. He later founded and directed the Conjunto Cubavana that served as a guideline for similar groups created later. He came to stand out as a singer and had a very peculiar way of interpreting the Cuban bolero.

He performed on radio, television, theater, nightclubs and recorded several long-playing records. He played almost all the rhythms.

His death occurred in Havana on April 6, 1978.

 

1937. José Westbrook (Joe) is born in Havana.

Upon entering the University of Havana in the School of Social Sciences and Administrative Law, he established contacts with many young revolutionaries.

On March 13, 1957, he participated, together with José Antonio Echeverría, in the occupation of the Radio Reloj station, while other members of the Revolutionary Directorate carried out the attack on the Presidential Palace.

He was assassinated on April 20, 1957 at Humboldt 7 in Havana along with other revolutionary combatants by forces of the Batista dictatorship who carried out an attack against that building where they had taken refuge.

 

1937. Julio Fernández Bulté is born in Havana.

He studied Law and Philosophy and Letters at the University of Havana, where he graduated as a Doctor of Law.

He taught for more than 37 years. He was the author of a large number of textbooks used in the teaching of Law throughout the country. He also had dozens of articles and essays published abroad. His participation in several Latin American Congresses of Roman Law and in interregional meetings on this discipline was highlighted.

In the last years of his existence, he dedicated his work to Human Rights issues and wrote several papers on the matter.

He passed away in Havana on October 30, 2008.

 

1959. Commander in Chief Fidel Castro spoke at the delivery ceremony to the Ministry of Education of what had been until then the Columbia military camp. Also with this fact, the opening of the first school year of the revolutionary period in Cuba was carried out.

In one part of his speech, Fidel said: "The educational plans of the Revolution highlight the need to bring education to peasant children, to create vacation camps, offer visits to the beaches and other incentives for outstanding students."

 

1959. Idelfonso Pérez Vigueras dies in Havana.

He was a veterinary doctor who dedicated his greatest efforts to the Veterinary School, as well as to study and scientific research.

In his work as a writer he produced more than 80 works, highlighting two books and numerous articles that were published both in Cuba and internationally.

He made significant contributions on the role of the veterinarian in public hygiene and the National Livestock Industry.

His birth took place on February 18, 1892 in Pinar del Río.
