Cuba boosts population immunity with anti-Covid-19 booster dose

Nine million 977 thousand 529, representing 90.1 percent of the population, have already completed the vaccination scheme, according to figures from the Cuban Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP).

A report from the MINSAP specifies that until this July 24, 10 million 683 thousand 694 citizens have a dose of national immunizers, the second dose already covers nine million 419 thousand 658, and nine million 121 thousand 161 have the third.

It also highlights that the Greater Antilles accumulates 39 million 220 thousand 632 administered doses of the Cuban Sovereign 02, Sovereign Plus and Abdala vaccines.

The massive anti-Covid-19 vaccination in Cuba has allowed the reduction of daily positive cases, hospitalizations and deaths.

However, the emergence of new variants of Ómicron has caused outbreaks of Covid-19 in some countries. Among these variants is BA.5, which has caused a trend of increasing cases in Cuba in recent weeks.

One of the most recent sub-variants identified in the world is the BA.2.75 which has been named Centauro.

In recent statements to Granma, Dr. Eduardo Martínez Díaz, president of the Business Group of the Biotechnological and Pharmaceutical Industries of Cuba, explained that it shares 45 mutations with Ómicron BA.5 and has 15 of its own, among which there are two that are worrying because they facilitate entry of the virus into the cell.

Centauro is already present in some twelve nations, including Peru, where the first case in South America was identified on July 21.

Given this reality, the MINSAP has decided to boost immunity with another booster dose to the population. Until this July 24, seven million 440 thousand 878 Cubans have received a booster dose against Covid-19.

According to data from the National Office of Statistics and Information of Cuba, the population of the island at the end of 2020 was about 11 million 180 thousand inhabitants.
