Cuba recognized as a pioneer in childhood immunization against Covid-19

The American newspaper The Washington Post cataloged Cuba as a pioneer in child immunization against Covid-19, with its own vaccines, an achievement achieved months ago.

Prensa Latina reports that the article published this Saturday in The Washington Post compares this result with the fact that now the United States finally authorizes vaccination for children under five years of age.

For Cuba, the obstacles were titanic, the Post underlined in its article, where it mentions Washington's coercive measures as one of the problems that the island had to overcome to achieve the success of its formulations.

The text highlights the work of Cuban scientists in the creation of drugs used in the pediatric population, such as Vicente Vérez, General Director of the Finlay Institute of Vaccines, who was part of the team that developed the formulations of the Sovereign line, applied to adults and kids.

The publication points out the scientific success achieved as a result of the vision of the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, who invested in the development of the biotechnological industry and in the preparation of professionals.

The newspaper highlights that years of work on childhood vaccines turned out to be an advantage for Cuban scientists, and points out that the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines used a new technology while the Cubans relied on a more traditional approach.

The Antillean nation's vaccines used in minors (Soberana 02, Soberana Plus and Abdala) are conjugated formulations of subunits, which include harmless parts of a virus to stimulate the immune system to produce antibodies.

Cuba began vaccinating children two years and older in September 2021, much earlier than most other countries, and much richer. Now it is running phase 2 clinical trials with children under two years of age, a fact that has marked a milestone not only for the Caribbean nation, but for the world that recognizes that vaccination strategy that placed all people at the center, including their girls and boys.

In Cuba, after vaccination with Soberana 02, no child has died from covid-19, and Cuban health authorities estimate that more than 70,000 Cuban children stopped being infected in the midst of the wave of the omicron variant, thanks to the impact of the massive campaign pediatric anticovid vaccination in the country.
