Inaugurated the first work of Tactical Urbanism in Havana

The first work of tactical urbanism, which is part of the project to improve transport services in the Diez de Octubre Corridor, was inaugurated in this municipality of Havana.

According to Granma, the Tactical Urbanism Project, promoted by the European Community, is a collaborative process to recover public space and maximize its shared value and is carried out through light, low-cost and rapid implementation interventions to explore alternatives for improving the spaces of the communities it intends to serve.

It also highlights that the initiative has proven to be a very useful tool to redistribute the use of roads, allocate more space to sidewalks, walkways and bike paths, promoting pedestrian or non-motorized mobility in response to current needs.

Speaking to this medium, Leandro Méndez Peña, director of the General Directorate of Provincial Transportation of Havana (DGTPH), explained that this space -financed by the European Union and implemented by the French Development Agency- will manage urban mobility in the Tamarindo Popular Council uniting the useful with the recreational, starting from the community link as the main pillar of the proposals towards the DGTPH.

Méndez Peña added that, with an artistic aspect, the project guides vehicular circulation with aspects related to the Traffic Law and will contribute to the reduction of accident levels.

On the other hand, Patrice Paoli, French ambassador to Cuba, highlighted that the studies carried out for this space include the improvement of traffic on the road, the promotion of safer mobility, the use of low-emission collective transport and improving spaces for pedestrians and bicycles.

"This is a work that mixes art and urban development and shows that technical studies can have a direct impact on neighborhoods and citizens," said the diplomat.

The Tamarindo-Diez de Octubre-Arango crossing is located in the most traveled area of the Calzada de Diez de Octubre, so the scenario was used to offer safe places to pedestrians and make the crossing a friendlier and more colorful place, concludes this medium.
