Havana ephemeris. June 1.

1963.- International Children's Day is celebrated in Cuba, and in Havana specifically, for the first time.

 This date was instituted in the world in correspondence with what was agreed at the Congress for the Defense of Children held in Vienna in April 1952.

This initiative materialized with the purpose of promoting formulas to achieve the harmonious development of the child's personality and launching a universal campaign to ensure a fuller life for infants.

Precisely the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, of the United Nations Organization, raises the need to protect them against all forms of abandonment, cruelty and exploitation.

The aforementioned Declaration also details how necessary it is to educate children in a spirit of understanding, tolerance, friendship among peoples, peace and universal brotherhood and with the full awareness that they must devote their energies and aptitudes to the service of their fellow men. .

In Cuba every year on this date multiple activities are carried out, although beyond this in the country programs are constantly carried out aimed at promoting the defense of children and their full incorporation into educational, artistic, sports and recreational activities that contribute to their formation and full development.

The Revolution has created an entire legislative body dedicated to guaranteeing the survival, development, protection and participation of the younger population.

 

1968. The Cuban geologist Jorge Broderman Vignier dies in Havana.

He studied at the School of Arts and Crafts and graduated as a civil builder in 1905. Years later he obtained the titles of Civil Engineer and Architect at the University of Havana.

He began his professional life in 1910 as an assistant engineer for the Ministry of Public Works of the Oriente district.

In 1918 he was elected president of the College of Architects of Havana and later with equal responsibility in the Cuban Society of Engineers. He was a member of the Academy of Medical, Physical and Natural Sciences of Havana and of the Felipe Poey Cuban Society of Natural History.

In his work he was the author of more than fifty works related to topics of his profession of great utility for the knowledge of hydraulic basins and mining areas, in addition to a national cartographic study, which achieved the Gold Medal and Diploma awarded by the Geographical Society of Cuba.

In his honor, the Cuban Society of Geology establishes the "Jorge Brodermann Vignier" award, to highlight the effort and results of the members of the Association in conducting it.

His birth took place in the Cuban capital on May 21, 1889.
