Havana anniversaries. May 8th

 

1866.  Juan Miguel Dihigo Mestre is born in Havana.

He graduated from the University of Havana with a degree in Philosophy and Letters. A year later he obtained a doctorate in those disciplines. In 1898, he obtained a doctorate in Civil and Canon Law at the center of higher studies in Havana.   Linguist, philologist and pedagogue, he made several contributions to the pedagogical sciences, among which are the foundation of the first laboratory of experimental phonetics at the University of Havana, the only one of its kind that existed in Latin America at that time, and the creation in 1919 of the Museum of Classical Archaeology.

Together with his uncle Arístides Mestre Hevia, he founded the Revista de la Facultad de Letras y Ciencias of the University of Havana. From his creation there are multiple works on

Philology and Linguistics.

He died in Havana on January 14, 1952.

 

1934.  Dr. Julio Ortiz Cano dies in Havana.

Graduated in medicine at the University of Havana, he traveled to France to specialize in gynecology and obstetrics.

He performed the first appendicitis operation on the island with a correct diagnosis. Years later, also in Cuba, he took part in a dermoepidermal graft to large flaps and in the first ureteric - cysto - neoplasty. 

Uretero - cysto - neostomy with success.

 He was a member of the Royal Academy of Medical, Physical and Natural Sciences of Havana, of the Society of Surgery and director of the Maternity Hospital of Havana.

His birth took place in the Cuban capital on November 3, 1873.
