Havana anniversaries. May 3rd.

1923.   The outstanding ceramist and sculptor Marta Arjona Perez is born in Havana.

She studied drawing and modeling at the San Alejandro School in Havana and ceramics at different specialized centers in Paris, France.

Faithful to her Mambi origins, since her youth she was committed to the most progressive causes of her time. He was a member of the Popular Socialist Party, the Nuestro Tiempo Cultural Society and the University Student Federation (FEU). 

As a professional, he was part of the group of artists who, at the beginning of the 1950s, developed Cuban ceramics. 

In his work, he made a notable contribution to the protection and conservation of the national heritage. Likewise, he carried out a very important work in the creation of the network of museums in the country. For her meritorious work she was awarded numerous prizes and distinctions, among others the Doctor Honoris Causa in Art granted by the Higher Institute of Art, ISA, and she was also declared Heroine of Labor of the Republic of Cuba.

She died in Havana on May 23, 2006.

 

1992.   Abelardo Moreno Bonilla died in Havana. 

He was a biologist and university professor and had a wide participation in scientific events both in Cuba and abroad.  He made numerous contributions in the field of research and published more than 100 articles and books, including "Cuban Ornithology", a three-volume work. He was also among the founders of the Cuban Academy of Sciences in 1962.

He was born in the town of Sagua La Grande, then province of Las Villas, on February 13, 1913.
