Havana anniversaries. April 28.

1923.   Fina García Marruz is born in Havana.

Her deep love for poetry became evident especially when she had the opportunity to meet and interact with the famous Spanish poet Juan Ramón Jiménez, on the occasion of his visit to Cuba, in the 1930s, in the 20th century.

She belonged to the group of poets of the magazine Orígenes together with her husband Cintio Vitier. She worked as a literary researcher at the José Martí National Library and the Center for Martí Studies.

Her poetry has been translated into several languages. She was awarded the National Prize for Literature in 1990.

In relation to his motivations for writing he also expressed on one occasion: "I do not write about everything I want, in all of us there are impregnable zones. I write about things that have impressed me and to which I can find a music, an accent, to bring to poetry".

 

1959.    Casa de las Américas is founded in Havana.

It is an institution of socio-cultural integration with Latin America, the Caribbean and the rest of the world, disseminating artistic and literary material through promotional activities, concerts, contests, exhibitions, festivals and seminars.

Its founding director was Haydee Santamaría, heroine of the assault on the Moncada Barracks and the revolutionary struggle in the Sierra Maestra. It was later presided over by the painter Mariano Rodríguez and the poet and essayist Roberto Fernández Retamar. Currently, this institution is presided over by writer, editor and professor Abel Prieto Jiménez.

Casa de las Américas disseminates, researches, sponsors, awards and publishes the work of writers, plastic artists, musicians, theater artists and scholars of literature, arts and social sciences of the continent; whose cultural integration it encourages; while fostering exchanges with institutions and people from all over the world. It is conceived as a space of encounter and dialogue of different perspectives in a climate of renovating ideas.
