Havana anniversaries. April 27th.

1921.   Pastorita Núñez is born in Havana.

She was an active clandestine combatant in the ranks of the 26th of July Movement and one of the founders of the Civic Front of Martian Women. As a guerrilla fighter in the Sierra Maestra she reached the rank of first lieutenant in the Rebel Army.

After the revolutionary triumph, she directed the National Institute of Savings and Housing, which allowed her to be the protagonist of one of the first housing plans of the Revolutionary Government.

With the same tenacity and until her retirement, she carried out other important tasks. In 2000, she was awarded the title of National Labor Heroine.

She passed away in Havana on December 26, 2010.

 

1997.   The outstanding Cuban writer Dulce María Loynaz died in Havana.

She was awarded the National Literature Prize in 1987 and the Miguel de Cervantes Prize in 1992.

Throughout time she has been recognized as one of the most relevant Cuban and Latin American poets. She also played a very fruitful role as a member of several important institutions, including the National Academy of Arts and Letters, the Cuban Academy of Language and the Royal Spanish Academy of Language.   

Since February 5, 2005, the Dulce María Loynaz Cultural Center has been operating in the mansion she lived in between 1947 and 1997, located in the Vedado area of Havana.

She was born in the Cuban capital on December 10, 1902.
