Havana anniversaries. April 26.

1966.   Roberto Faz, an important figure of Cuban popular music, dies in Havana.

He was born on September 18, 1914 in the overseas town of Regla in Havana. He began his work in Cuban music in 1927 when he was 13 years old.  He later stood out as a singer and orchestra conductor. His voice is recorded in nearly 400 recordings and in his presentations he projected optimism and playfulness. His improvisations were ingenious in son montuno and guaracha.

He appeared for the last time before the public in a dance held at Guanabo beach on April 24, 1966.

 

 

1938. José Ramón de Lázaro Bencomo is born in San Antonio de los Baños, then province of Havana.

Artistically known as José Delarra, he was an outstanding sculptor and painter. He created works in plaster, marble, stone, bronze and wood. His first personal exhibition was presented at the Economic Society of Friends of the Country of Havana.

Among his most transcendental works is the monument erected in the city of Santa Clara in homage to Commander Ernesto Che Guevara. He also conceived the mausoleum where the remains of Che and his comrades who fell in Bolivia are kept. His prolific creation is witnessed in 20 countries and his works were reflected in 272 collective and personal exhibitions, the last of which, in May 2003, was entitled "De la epopeya a la mesura" and was exhibited at the José Martí Memorial in the Cuban capital.

 Delarra died in Havana on August 26, 2003.
