Havana anniversaries. April 23rd

1898. Juan Evangelista Delgado Delgado died in the town of Bejucal, then the province of Havana.

Havana, Juan Evangelista Delgado González died.

He was born in the municipality of Bejucal on December 27, 1868.

He joined the Liberation Army in 1896 and was incorporated in the area of his native land. During his military career, Major General Máximo Gómez named him captain recruiter with the mission of organizing a combat unit. He reached the rank of Colonel of the Liberation Army.  He performed the feat of rescuing the corpses of Major General Antonio Maceo and Captain Francisco Gómez Toro in San Pedro, on December 7, 1896. The remains of both independence fighters were later buried clandestinely in the area of El Cacahual.

 

1977.  Honorio Muñoz dies in Havana.

He was born on November 21, 1910 in Sancti Spiritus, then province of Las Villas.

He dedicated himself to journalism, activity that he carried out during a great part of his life. His revolutionary convictions led him to face dangers and moments of tension in different periods of Cuban society. He suffered persecution and jail on several occasions due to his collaboration in different clandestine publications. He was very determined, well educated, polemic, critical and self-critical. He worked in Hoy Newspaper and Mil Diez Radio Station and was also founder of the School of Journalism of the University of Havana.

After the triumph of the Revolution, in 1963, when the Union of Cuban Journalists, UPEC, was created, he was elected president of that organization.
