Havana´s important dates. April 11th

1900- José de Armas y Céspedes dies in Havana. 

 

Born in the city of Camaguey on June 28th 1834. He received in his hometown his first education and then was sent by his parents to France in order to fulfill his education at the Louis La Grand Lyceum.

After 12 years in the french capital he returned to Cuba in 1854. At his arrival he began to collaborate with some publishing  and made some trasnlations to English and French.

He was a notorious writter and journalist. When the indepence war started in 1868, he emigrates to the United States where fought journalistic campaigns in defense of the Cubans that were fighting in Cuban soil. Some years ago, after the re-start of the War of 68, his writting answered to Cuban interests.

 

 

1916-        Birth of Isaac Nicola in Havana

He initiated his musical studies with his mother, Clara Romero, and then became a prominent student of the Municipal Conservatory of Havana. In 1934  got one of the first certificates of Guitar teacher  granted in Cuba. He graduated as a Professor of Theory, History and Aesthetic of the Music, as well as Solfeggio and Harmony, after having taken courses linked to the guitar and to Research on Music in Paris.

Leo Brower, who was his student, commented anout him that he would become the heart of the guitar in Cuba.

He died in Havana, at the age of 81, on June 14th, 1997.
